Ning Kam was first taught violin by her father, Kam Kee Yong, a violinist and composer. In 1987, she entered the Menuhin School, where she worked with Sidney Griller, Maurizio Fuks and Wen Zhou Li. She then studied at the Curtis Institute with Jaime Laredo and the Cleveland Institute of Music with Donald Weilerstein. She has played with various orchestras, including the Singapore Symphony, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo and the Cleveland Orchestra.

Ning Kam was the first prizewinner in the Menuhin Competition in Folkestone in 1991, a prizewinner in the third Pablo Sarasate Competition and a finalist in the Henryk Szering Career Award contest in Monaco in 2000.
