Baryton-basse, né à Bruxelles, José Van Dam compte aujourd’hui parmi les tout grands interprètes du monde vocal. Depuis ses débuts à Paris, dans Les Troyens, il est l’invité régulier des plus importantes maisons d’opéra et des festivals renommés dans le monde (Paris, Covent Garden, La Scala de Milan, le Staatsoper de Vienne, le Deutsche Oper de Berlin, le Metropolitan, le Teatro Colón, les Festivals de Salzbourg, Aix-en-Provence, Orange, etc.). Il a interprété Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra, Philippe II (Don Carlos), Don Giovanni, Boris Godounov, Amfortas (Parsifal), Der Fliegende Holländer, Wozzeck et bien d’autres rôles encore. La création du rôle titre dans le Saint-François d’Assise d’Olivier Messiaen, a été applaudie chaleureusement tant à Paris qu’à Salzbourg, en 1983 puis en 1992. Ses rôles d’opéra n’empêchent pas José Van Dam de développer également une carrière dans l’oratorio et dans le Lied ; son répertoire y est tout aussi large et il a chanté sous la baguette de H. von Karajan, C. Abbado, R. Muti, G. Solti, S. Ozawa, etc. Sa discographie est impressionnante et a été récompensée par de nombreux prix. Il s’est produit au cinéma, notamment dans le célèbre film ‘Le Maître de Musique’. José Van Dam a en outre reçu le titre de Kammersänger de la ville de Berlin et le grade de Chevalier dans l’ordre de la Légion d’honneur.

Abbado, R. Muti, G. Solti, S. Ozawa. Zijn vertolking van de hoofdrol in Saint-François d’Assise van Olivier Messiaen werd zowel in Parijs (1983) als in Salzburg (1992) met geestdrift onthaald. José Van Dam bouwde naast zijn operacarrière ook een uitgebreid repertoire in oratoria en Lieder op. Heel wat opnames uit zijn indrukwekkende discografie zijn met talrijke prijzen beloond. Hij speelt een hoofdrol in de filmkraker ‘Le Maître de Musique’. His roles have included Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra, Philip II (in Don Carlos), Don Giovanni, Boris Godunov, Amfortas in Parsifal, the Flying Dutchman, and Wozzeck, to name but a few. His performance in the title role of Messiaen’s Saint François d’Assise was warmly received in Paris and Salzburg, in 1983 and again in 1992. His operatic career has not prevented him from branching into oratorio and lieder, in which his repertoire is equally extensive ; he has sung under H. von Karajan, C. Abbado, R. Muti, G. Solti, S. Ozawa, among others. In addition to boasting an impressive, award-winning discography, he has also appeared in films, most notably in the famous ‘Le Maître de Musique’.
